Sandman woke briefly when Ivan laid him on the narrow cot Kiri provided on the third floor. He whispered, “Thank you” to Ivan and planted a kiss full of things Ivan didn’t understand on Tuck’s mouth before drifting to sleep again. Tuck stroked the filthy, bloody blond head a couple of times before walking out of the room. He didn’t look at Ivan.
Ivan followed, feeling lost and unaccountably angry. He shook his head at Kiri’s questioning glance. “Thanks, Kiri. We’ll come down next cycle and see how he is. Com me if there’s a problem.”
“Will do.” She stared at Tuck’s retreating back with a frown. “Same here. Com if you have to, but you know the drill. Showing up in person’s better.”
“I know.” He squeezed her shoulder. “See you.”
He strode along the hall, down the stairs, down the first-floor hallway, out the door past Garan’s watchful eye to the street where Tuck stood waiting, arms crossed, gnawing his thumbnail again.
Ivan touched his arm. Together, they crossed to the alleyway and started the trip to the lift.
“You staying at my place?” Ivan asked after a few silent minutes.
When Tuck stopped and raised his head, the raw vulnerability in his eyes stole Ivan’s breath. “Can I?”
“Yeah. Of course.” Acting on instinct, Ivan cupped Tuck’s face between his palms and kissed him. A faint taste of blood lingered on his lips. Sandman’s blood. Ivan did his best to ignore it. “I know things got kind of weird. But nothing’s really changed, at least as far as I’m concerned.”
The whole adventure must’ve worn Tuck’s usual guard tissue-thin, because the boiling brew of emotions Ivan had always suspected were there underneath shone from Tuck’s face brighter than a rogue comet. “Everything’s changing, Ivan. Everything. But not this.” A stubborn crease dug into his brow. He grabbed Ivan’s wrists. “Not this.”
The strange, sweet warmth Ivan had felt more and more lately rose inside him to clog his throat. This time, Tuck stretched to meet him when he tilted his head down, and the kiss went deep. Tuck made a low, hungry noise that sent electric jolts down Ivan’s spine.
Ivan forced himself to break the kiss before he gave in to the urge to fuck Tuck against the alley wall. “My place. Now.”
Tuck didn’t say a word, just clung with fists white-knuckled around Ivan’s wrists and hot breaths panting against his throat. Before Ivan’s vague apprehension could turn into full-blown worry, Tuck let go and stepped back with a dazed grin. “You better have lube.”
Ivan did, and Tuck knew it. But Ivan laughed anyway, drew his sizzler and did his best to focus on his surroundings as they headed for the lift as fast as they could.
